Chaucers Mead & Fruit Wine

The CHAUCER’S dessert wine story begins on the banks of Soquel Creek in the Santa Cruz Mountains of California. In 1964, a young winemaker, Lawrence Bargetto, saw an opportunity to create a new style of dessert wine made from fresh, locally-grown fruit in Santa Cruz County.
With the fresh market for plums in a state of disarray, the experimental vintner decided to make wine from the Santa Rosa Plums growing on the winery property. Using the skills he learned from his father, he picked the fresh plums into 40 lb. log boxes and dumped them into the empty open-top redwood fermentation tanks. Since it was summer, the fermentation tanks were empty and could be used for this new dessert wine experiment.

About Chaucer's

CHAUCER’S CELLARS, part of BARGETTO WINERY, has been producing premium, award-winning Honey Mead and Fruit Wines for over 50 years.

Our Mead is produced from 100% natural honey and our Raspberry Mead is a blend of our Mead and a small portion of our raspberry wine. Other CHAUCER’S wines, produced with only 100% pure fruit, capture the essence of Raspberry, Apricot, Blackberry and Pomegranate.

Where to purchase CHAUCER'S WINE Products

The honey for this specialty dessert-style wine is produced in hives throughout the Sierras. It is composed of a blend of three types of honey: cotton– alfalfa, orange blossom and sage. Each type brings a unique quality to the blend and contributes to the overall complexity of the mead. Alfalfa is neutral in flavor but yields a dark, amber color. The orange blossom brings a floral bouquet to the nose of the wine. Toyon, an evergreen shrub also known as California Holly, is lighter in color than the alfalfa and helps to balance the blend. Our Mead can be served chilled or mulled with the included spice packs.

Our Raspberry Mead is a blend of our Chaucer’s Mead and a small portion of our Raspberry Wine. A blend of fruit such as raspberry is known as Melomel. This blend of fruit and honey has been enjoyed for centuries. Less sweet than our regular mead, this wine finishes with a lingering crisp, refreshing raspberry and honeysuckle impression.

Our Blackberry wine is made from 100% pure blackberry varieties. We make the wine straight from the berries; we don’t make it from blackberry juice that was made by someone else. We take fresh berries and ferment them to dry. Right before bottling we add fresh juice back in to help with the sweetness and the fresh blackberry aroma.

Rich and sensual, our Raspberry wine is like a first kiss, innocent and impressionable. The color of this wine is a deep garnet and nose is rich in raspberry jam, cherry and baking spices. There’s a hint of apple and cherry on the palate. Crisp acidity from the berries balances well with the sweetness of this wine. When served fresh, this wine has bright ripe raspberry on the nose, flavor and finish.

This brilliant ruby-colored wine displays a silky elegance in the flavor profile punctuated by its spunky, acidic backbone. This wine is fantastic straight-up and chilled, paired with a favorite entrée or dessert…or even mixed in a cocktail. As a key flavor component, pomegranate has supplied the giddy-up to a Roy Rogers, the twinkle to a Shirley Temple and the flash in a Tequila Sunrise.

Transforming golden rays of sunshine into edible fruit, the juicy aromas of this ripe apricot wine will take you back into a midsummer’s dream! Youthful, rich, and golden, pair this mouthwatering wine with the finest of cheeses as the perfect aperitif.
